ITAM's Top 5 EDM Music Videos | November

#1: Cazzette - “Beam Me Up”

Part District 9, part worldwide dance party, this Mad Ruk produced clip not only transcends the boundaries of a standard music video, but takes EDM to a new level of narrative craft. The concept is simple: a pair of cassette shaped spaceships appear over a nameless metropolis and broadcast an infectious beat that forces everyone to let go and dance. But the realistic complexity of the graphics and the impressive amount of world building, accomplished through a number of intimate interviews, make this video more akin to a 4 minute feature film.

#2: Above & Beyond - “Alchemy”

Above & Beyond's artistry extends far beyond the limitations of a single medium. Their music videos are never a rushed product to meet a deadline, but rather thoughtful visual expressions of their music born through a collaboration between the band and a world-class production team. Facing the sheer power of their emotive classic “Alchemy,” the trio turned to seasoned actress Mackenzie Firgens to portray a women falling apart, in slow motion, as she loses the man she loves to a viscous love triangle.

#3: Mediks - “By A Thread”

A child's dearest possession can often be held together, quite literally, by a thread and it is that fragility that Gulliver Moore draws upon in his clip for Mediks' latest single. When a young boy's teddy bear is accidentally wounded during story time, the bear is rushed to hospital for an emergency surgery from none other than the Mediks crew. Such a consept could have gotten silly fast, but with the help of passionate acting and impressive camera work – it may as well be a human on the operating table.

#4: Flying Lotus - “Tiny Tortures”

If you have already hit play, let me answer your first question: Yes, that is Elijah Wood. Playing an amputee lost in torturous hallucination, the world famous hobbit lent his refined skills to this snail-paced world of emotion visualized by director David Lewandowski. Lewandowski is not the only visual virtuoso at work here though, as artistically shadowed cinematography, skillfully applied slow motion and vibrant effects allow every frame of video to come together into a touching piece that brings the sounds of Flying Lotus to life.

#5: Habstrakt - "Get Funky"

There is something so powerful about elderly people rediscovering their youth that it has become a core theme of a many of the most successful EDM music videos. Modestep set the standard with a group of raging grandparents in their clip for “Sunlight,” Rusko followed up with a never-too-old-for-the-club hookup in “Someone to Love,” and now Habstrakt has made the concept new again with a former disco king turned gardner who is thrown back to his wonder years after indulging in a tasty beverage called “Get Funky.”

WTF: Skrillex & The Doors - “Breakin' A Sweat”

Vampires riding jet skies through shark infested waters. Need I say more?
