A good layering tee mostly goes unnoticed. It lies flat under an open flannel. It doesn't bunch at the waist of a shirt jacket, and the collar stays put when you pull a sweater over it. Get it wrong and you'll know by lunch: a hem hanging two inches below your overshirt, a neckline gone wavy, sleeves twisting inside a jacket.
So we compared eight men's tees that people actually buy for this job and scored them on fabric, fit and length, size range, neckline options, price and what buyers say after wearing them. Every price, size range and review count below was checked on the brand's own site on November 4, 2026. If you mostly wear your tee on its own, our best-fitting t-shirts ranking is the better read.
Ranking Algorithm
- Fabric & Drape (25%): What the tee is made of, and whether it lies smooth under a second layer or clings and bunches.
- Fit & Length (25%): How close the body sits. Can you pick a length that stops where your outer layer does?
- Size Range (15%): How far the size chart runs at both ends.
- Neckline & Colour Options (15%): Crew, V-neck and henley in the same tee, plus enough quiet colours to sit under plaid or a jacket.
- Price-to-Value (10%): The single-tee price, and a pack price where the brand prints one.
- Review Sentiment (10%): Star average and review count on the brand's own product page.

1. INTO THE AM
The Basic Tee wins because it fixes the two things that ruin a layered outfit: length and cling. It's cut athletic through the chest and arms but stays loose at the midsection, so it doesn't print through a flannel. Long torso? The Tall version adds 2 inches to the body and 1 inch to the sleeve, which means the hem stops where your overshirt does instead of peeking out below it. The same fit comes as a V-Neck Tee for open collars. And at $26.95 it undercuts most of this list.
- Fabric & Drape: 60% combed ring-spun cotton, 40% polyester; minimal shrink, tag-free
- Fit & Length: Modern athletic fit in Regular or Tall
- Size Range: Small through 4XL, plus Tall
- Neckline & Colour Options: Crew, V-Neck and Henley styles; 12 Basic Tee colours
- Price-to-Value: $26.95 single, $53.02 for a 3-pack
- Review Sentiment: 4.4 stars from 7,751 reviews on the Basic Tee page
Customer Review Summary
---
One buyer calls it the "Best tee I’ve ever had. True fit and very comfortable." Another likes that these are "Great Tshirts that don't just look like undershirts", which matters when the collar shows.
2. True Classic
True Classic runs closest to the winner. On a couple of counts it's ahead. The Classic Crew uses the same 60/40 cotton-poly blend in a fitted, athletic cut, and you can choose Short, Regular or Tall, a real plus for shorter guys whose tees hang past an overshirt. With 71,015 reviews it also has far more feedback than anyone else here. It lands second on price: $29.99 for a single tee, about three dollars more than our pick.
- Fabric & Drape: 60% combed ringspun cotton, 40% polyester jersey; the brand says it shrinks about 5% on low heat
- Fit & Length: Contemporary athletic cut in Short, Regular and Tall
- Size Range: S through 4XL
- Neckline & Colour Options: Crew, V-neck and long-sleeve henley; 31 colours of the Classic Crew
- Price-to-Value: $29.99 single
- Review Sentiment: 4.5 stars from 71,015 reviews
Customer Review Summary
---
Recent five-star reviews keep coming back to fit and wash: "Great fit and cut.. Washes super well and holds its shape", and "They are a true fit and the quality is great too."
3. Fresh Clean Tees
Want the top two's blend for less? Here it is. Fresh Clean Tees sells its crew at $23, in a 60/40 fabric it calls StratuSoft, with Short, Regular and Tall lengths from S to 4XL. The page describes it as a classic fit for the average-sized guy. That means a little more room than the top two, which is easy under a jacket and slightly baggier under a fitted flannel. Buyers seem happy: 4.6 stars across 28,791 reviews.
- Fabric & Drape: StratuSoft, 60% cotton and 40% polyester
- Fit & Length: Classic fit in Short, Regular and Tall
- Size Range: S through 4XL
- Neckline & Colour Options: Crew, V-neck and henley
- Price-to-Value: $23 single; the 6-pack is marked "Save $33"
- Review Sentiment: 4.6 stars from 28,791 reviews

One reviewer says it "Fits well and doesn't interfere with range of motion." Another sums it up as "Love the fit, fabric and colors."
4. Buck Mason
The best fabric on this list belongs to Buck Mason. Its Pima Curved Hem Tee is 140 GSM jersey knit from long-staple, USA-grown Supima cotton, sewn at the brand's own mill in Mohnton, Pennsylvania, and none of the other seven tees here publishes a fabric weight at all. The product page even pitches it as a base layer under an overshirt or jacket. Two things hold it at fourth. Sizes stop at XXL with no Tall. And $48 is a lot for a tee that mostly hides under something else.
- Fabric & Drape: 100% Supima cotton, 140 GSM, garment washed
- Fit & Length: Classic fit with a curved hem that runs a little longer at the sides and back
- Size Range: XS through XXL
- Neckline & Colour Options: Crew in this style; 9 colourways
- Price-to-Value: $48 single
- Review Sentiment: No product reviews shown on buckmason.com

Buck Mason doesn't show product reviews on its site, so there is nothing verifiable to quote.
5. Uniqlo
Uniqlo's SUPIMA Cotton T-Shirt is the cheapest single tee in 100% cotton here, at $24.90. It also has the best star average of the eight: 4.7 from 1,373 reviews. It's sold as unisex, XXS to 3XL, in 11 colours, and that XXS helps slim builds more than any other chart on this list. A few reviewers say it runs a bit long or large. That's fine tucked in. Under a cropped jacket, less so. No Tall, and no V-neck in this style.
- Fabric & Drape: 100% cotton (Supima)
- Fit & Length: Unisex cut in one length; some reviewers find it long
- Size Range: XXS through 3XL
- Neckline & Colour Options: Crew; 11 colours
- Price-to-Value: $24.90 single
- Review Sentiment: 4.7 stars from 1,373 reviews
Customer Review Summary
---
Layering comes up by name. One reviewer calls it "An amazing shirt to use for layering under a jacket or sweater." Another says it "Looks clean on its own or under a jacket."
6. Mack Weldon
Mack Weldon cuts its Pima Crew Neck slim, adds what it calls a recovery collar and says the tee looks as good under a blazer as it does on its own. For dressier layers, that's a fair pitch. The catch is the range. Sizes stop at XXL, there's no Tall, and at $48 it ties Buck Mason as the priciest single tee in the ranking. Reviews are solid if not spectacular: about 4.3 stars from 3,082.
- Fabric & Drape: 100% Pima cotton with a softening finish
- Fit & Length: Slim fit, recovery collar, one length
- Size Range: S through XXL
- Neckline & Colour Options: Crew, V-neck and henley; 16 colours listed
- Price-to-Value: $48 single
- Review Sentiment: 4.3 stars from 3,082 reviews
Customer Review Summary
---
Short and positive: "Fits great, very soft!" and "comfortable, doesn’t stretch out, unique colorway."
7. Everlane
Everlane says this is its lightest-weight tee and that the low weight is what makes it good for layering. It's 100% organic cotton in a slim cut, XS to XXL, at $34 or three for $69. So why seventh? Reviews. The black colourway sits at 3.9 stars from 233 reviews, the lowest average in the group, and at least one buyer wanted it softer and lighter still.
- Fabric & Drape: 100% OCS-certified organic cotton; the brand's lightest-weight tee
- Fit & Length: Slim fit, one length
- Size Range: XS through XXL
- Neckline & Colour Options: Crew and V-neck
- Price-to-Value: $34 single, 3 for $69
- Review Sentiment: 3.9 stars from 233 reviews (black)
Customer Review Summary

Fans like the hand-feel: "Incredibly soft and comfy tshirt. Washes well- kept its shape after washing." A three-star review found it "not as soft/light as I would have preferred."
8. Brooks Brothers
Brooks Brothers puts its Supima Cotton Crewneck 3-Pack on its own men's layering t-shirts page, and on paper it's a deal. Three 100% cotton tees, finished to resist odors, for $54.50, or about $18.17 a shirt. But it's really an undershirt. It's filed under Underwear & Socks and comes in grey or white only, XS to XXL. Recent reviews are what put it last: several of the newest say the collars roll after washing.
- Fabric & Drape: 100% Supima cotton with an odor-resistant finish
- Fit & Length: Undershirt cut, one length
- Size Range: XS through XXL
- Neckline & Colour Options: Crew, or the V-Neck Undershirt 3-Pack; grey and white
- Price-to-Value: $54.50 for 3
- Review Sentiment: 4.1 stars from 427 reviews
Customer Review Summary

Mixed lately. The newest five-star reviews are marked as incentivized, and several recent low ratings describe the same problem. One buyer of two 3-packs wrote that "the collar rolled on each one."

How to Layer a T-Shirt
Most layering advice comes down to one idea: the tee is the quiet part. Four combinations cover nearly every cool morning.
Under an open flannel. Go white, grey or black so the plaid does the talking, and keep the tee's hem level with the flannel's or just above it. Our Fairbanks Flannel works over any Basic Tee, and our flannel rankings cover the rest of the field.
Under a shirt jacket. A heavier outer layer looks better over a darker tee. Wear the Sierra Shirt Jacket open over a black Basic Tee with khakis. Done.
A tee over a long sleeve. The 90s move, back again. Put a short-sleeve tee over a fitted Long Sleeve Tee in a contrasting colour, and keep both close to the body or the sleeves will bunch at the elbow.
A t-shirt and a shirt, collar open. If the shirt's top button stays undone, a V-neck hides below the placket. Under a crew-neck sweater, it's the opposite: a crew neck shows one clean line at the collar.
About INTO THE AM: INTO THE AM has sold men's apparel online since 2012, and the Basic Tee is still where most guys start: a soft cotton-blend tee cut to fit through the arms and chest without clinging at the middle, in sizes S to 4XL plus Tall. More than five million have sold, with 100,000+ reviews across intotheam.com and Amazon. Find your size at intotheam.com.
